  Basic Info About Grants g

-Most all grants are aimed at solving problems in the community.
-Government grants are normally for non-governmental groups or organizations to carry out   the functions of government programs.
- Foundation grants are normally used for organizations or groups to solve problems that are not addressed by current government programs
-So if you want what the grant industry calls grant money you are likely going to have to become a non-profit organization.

REMEMBER THERE IS MORE NON-GRANT MONEY AVAILABLE TO ANYONE

Most people looking for financial assistance in their lives think they need a grant because they know that grants are given out by the government and they do not have to be paid back.  This is true but in the grant industry 99% of grants are for non-profit organizations to perform good works in the community.

But MORE IMPORTANTLY grants only represent about 20% of all the free money that is available for people

Grants :
Federal Government Grants                       $500 Billion
Foundation Grants                                        $42 Billion
                                                                   ____________
            Total Grant Money                         $542 Billion   =  17%

Other :
Other Free Money Programs                   $1,800 Billion
Loans & Loan Guarantees                          $350 Billion
Contracts                                                    $430 Billion
                                                             _______________
                  Total Other Money                 $2,580  Billion   = 83%

See only 17% of the money that is available to people in America is officially called grant money and most all of this goes to state and local governments and non-profit organizations.

The other money is where individuals can get:

- money to pay medical care
- money to help pay your mortgage
- money to start or expand a business
- money to go back to school
- money to train for a better job
- money to pay for day care
- money to invest in real estate
- more, more, more, more, etc.

The one caveat to this is there are grants that non-profits get from government and foundations where the money is then given to individuals for expenses, training, business, health care, etc.

4) Earmarks
Earmarks have been in the news a lot lately and recently I even participated in a documentary movie about earmarks.  Here is how the Office of Management and Budget describe Earmarks..
OMB defines earmarks as funds provided by the Congress for projects or programs where the congressional direction (in bill or report language) circumvents Executive Branch merit-based or competitive allocation processes, or specifies the location or recipient, or otherwise curtails the ability of the Executive Branch to manage critical aspects of the funds allocation process.

To me, it is a special grant that your congressman or senator can write into law that goes only to you.  Every Congressman and Senator seems set up to handle these requests from constituents.  Of course, everyone that asks does not receive one but that is true of everything.

It seems that each elected official collects all the earmarks that are submitted by constituents and he/she decides which ones to try to push thru for part of this special pot of Earmark money.  If your project is chosen you then have to fill out additional paperwork to get the money from a government agency.   The elected official does not give out the money directly.

It is another source of non-profit funding with a system that can be learned like any other.. Contact your congressman or senator's office and ask to speak to the person handling earmarks.   www.govengine.com
