Awards up to $9,000 for Renewable Energy Technologies
The District of Columbia Renewable Energy Demonstration Project (REDP) was developed by the District Department of the Environment (DDOE) Energy Division to increase the awareness and use of renewable-energy technologies by residents. Residential awards are limited to $3.00 per watt up to three kilowatts (kW), with a maximum award of $9,000. Eligible renewable technologies are photovoltaics, wind, biomass, geothermal electric, CHP/Cogeneration, small hydroelectric, fuel cells using renewable fuels, and other distributed generation technologies. Due to limited funding, applicants for round four funding will automatically enter a reservation queue for the next round of funding. Contact: District Department of the Environment, Energy Division, 2000 14th Street, NW, 300 East, Washington, DC 20009; 202-673-6700; Fax: (202) 673-6725; http://ddoe.dc.gov/ddoe/cwp/view,a,1209,q,493006.asp

Energy Improvements up to $2,675

Non-profit community-based organizations (CBOs) and community development corporations (CDCs) will provide improvements to the homes of income-eligible District residents. Up to $2,675 per unit will be available and approximately 318 homes will be weatherized under this program.  For more information, contact:  District Department of the Environment, 51 N Street, NE, 6th Floor, Washington, DC 20002; 202-673-6700; http://ddoe.dc.gov/ddoe/cwp/view,a,1209,q,492873.asp

Free Energy Saving Measures for DC Homeowners

If you qualify, DDOE will evaluate your home -- including the building envelope, mechanical systems, base loads, indoor air quality and occupants -- to determine the energy, comfort, health and safety needs of your building. DDOE will also include cost-effective refrigerator replacements, lighting replacements, water heater wraps, hot water pipe wraps and low-flow showerheads and faucets.  To learn more, contact:  District Department of the Environment, 51 N Street, NE, 6th Floor, Washington, DC 20002; 202-673-6700; http://ddoe.dc.gov/ddoe/cwp/view,a,1209,q,492873.asp

Free Appliances Help Save DC Homeowners Money

The District Department of the Environment will replace your old energy-deficient room air conditioners and refrigerators with new ENERGY STAR-rated appliances for free.  In addition, DDOE also gives away approximately 200 air conditioners a year to qualified seniors, at least 60 years of age, who have a doctor's certificate for their chronically ill condition.  To find out how to qualify for this help, contact:  District Department of the Environment, 51 N Street, NE, 6th Floor, Washington, DC 20002; 202-673-6700; http://ddoe.dc.gov/ddoe/cwp/view,a,1209,q,492866.asp

Free Energy Efficiency Kit Distribution

The Department of the Environment gives qualified DC citizens an energy kit worth over $100 that includes materials that can easily be installed in the home. The resident is also given instruction on how to install the materials during a 30-minute workshop when they visit the DC Energy Office or attend the community workshops. The kit includes items such as caulk and caulk gun, plastic storm windows, compact fluorescent bulbs and weather-stripping for doors and windows. The kit has been estimated to save at least 5% on energy bills.  To learn more on how you can obtain an energy saving kit, contact:  District Department of the Environment, 51 N Street, NE, 6th Floor, Washington, DC 20002; 202-535-2600; http://ddoe.dc.gov/ddoe/cwp/view,a,1209,q,493104.asp

FREE Energy Workshops

The District Department of the Environment operates FREE energy workshops to teach consumers "How to Install Energy Saving Measures," the low-cost way. These workshops help offset rising energy costs and assist the interest in do-it-yourself techniques.  The workshops will be held at the DDOE Energy Office, located at 2000 14th Street, NW, 2nd floor. All DC residents are welcome to attend. The Energy Office also performs energy workshops for schools, churches and community groups by request.  Residents will see demonstrations of how to install caulking, weather-stripping for doors and windows, door-sweeps, checking and changing furnace filters and more. Suggestions on easy ways to change energy related behavior and lower consumption will be given. Tips on how to conserve gasoline will also be presented.  For more information, contact:  District Department of the Environment, 51 N Street, NE, 6th Floor, Washington, DC 20002; 202-673-6700; http://ddoe.dc.gov/ddoe/cwp/view,a,1209,q,493055.asp
