Rewards up to $20,000 for Renewable Energy Technologies
The District of Columbia Renewable Energy Demonstration Project (REDP) was developed by the District Department of the Environment (DDOE) Energy Division to increase the awareness and use of renewable-energy technologies by businesses and institutions. Non-residential awards are limited to $2.50 per watt up to 8 kW, with a maximum award of $20,000. Eligible renewable technologies are photovoltaics, wind, biomass, geothermal electric, CHP/Cogeneration, small hydroelectric, fuel cells using renewable fuels, and other distributed generation technologies. Due to limited funding, applicants for round four funding will automatically enter a reservation queue for the next round of funding. Contact: District Department of the Environment, Energy Division, 2000 14th Street, NW, 300 East, Washington, DC 20009; 202-673-6700; Fax: (202) 673-6725; http://ddoe.dc.gov/ddoe/cwp/view,a,1209,q,493006.asp

If you're a resident or business owner in the District of Columbia, this website will show you what government, private industry and the non-profit sector have to offer in the renewable and sustainable energy sector.  To find out what is available for your needs, go to:  District Department of the Environment, 51 N Street, NE, 6th Floor, Washington, DC 20002; 202-535-2600; http://green.dc.gov/green/cwp/view,a,1244,q,461275.asp

Green Roof Grants

Interested in receiving a green roof subsidy? Building owners can apply for a grant through the District Department of the Environment (DDOE) and DC Greenworks, a non-profit social enterprise. The subsidy will fund $3 per square foot of the green roof for each qualified project, with a cap of $12,000 per property. Eligible buildings within DC’s Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Zone can receive a grant through DDOE’s Watershed Protection Division’s Pilot Green Roof Subsidy Program.  Up to $40,000 remains in the program, which promotes using green roofs to reduce storm water runoff.  For more information about the program and to download an application, contact:  D.C. Greenworks, 1341 H St. NE, Suite 203, Washington, D.C. 20002; 202-518-6195; Fax: 202-518-6115; http://www.dcgreenworks.org

Up to $5,000 Grants for Projects That Help the Environment

Project Learning Tree (PLT) is an environmental education program for educators and students up to grade 12.   As part of their educational goals, PLT offers GreenWorks! grants, which engage PLT educators and their students with their local community in "learning-by-doing" environmental projects.  GreenWorks! grants are awarded in the spring and fall of each year in the following two funding categories:

  • $250 to $1,000 GreenWorks! Grants
The majority of GreenWorks! funding will be awarded to project proposals in the $250 to $1000 category.   Projects in this category must be completed within one year’s time.
  • $1,001 to $5,000 GreenWorks! Grants
The $1,001 to $5,000 funding category is designed to be extremely competitive.  As such, the number of proposals funded in this category will be limited.  Projects in this category must be completed within two year’s time.

To learn more about the eligibility requirements for each grant category, contact your PLT State Coordinator (http://www.plt.org/cms/pages/25_120_0.html) who can also help you draft a competitive application.  For basic information, contact:  Project Learning Tree, 1111 19th Street, NW, Suite 780, Washington, DC  20036; 202-463-2457 or 202-463-2475; http://www.plt.org/cms/pages/21_22_18.html
